LEED for Neighborhood Development: A Sustainability Tool for Local Governments
Sophie Lambert, U.S. Green Building Council
Zoning codes in many municipalities are outdated and make sustainable development very challenging for planners who want to see this type of development and for developers who have to spend time and money on getting variances and approvals. One of the tools in the sustainability toolbox of many jurisdictions is the LEED for Neighborhood Development rating system, the first national system to evaluate smart growth, urbanism, and green building at the neighborhood-scale. This presentation will provide an overview of the rating system and show four strategies that local governments can use to leverage LEED-ND in their communities.
Closing Plenary:
Sustainable Planning in Virginia: A Panel with Local Government Officials
Moderator: Jackie Stewart Richmond Regional Planning District Commission, Panelists: Jerry Walker, Henrico County; Bill Blatter, City of Lexington; Alicia Zatcoff, City of Richmond; Joan Kelsch, City of Arlington
The panel will highlight, through interactive discussion, the status of sustainable planning and development in each of their localities. Our moderator will lead the panel through a series of questions related to challenges with local codes, aging infrastructure, and urban redevelopment. In addition, the panel will show their successes in sustainable planning and green development. We have brought together the best in local planning and this unique scenario will result in an instructive, educational, and lively discussion.
