Site photos show the range of sights and sounds from the west to east ends of Mayo Island and the break in that landscape created by the 14th Street Bridge.  The west end of the island provides quiet, sandy river beaches and views toward other islands as well as the north river bank and downtown Richmond beyond. Moving east takes you through lush vegetation and trees as well as make-shift campsites where a homeless population lives for much of the year. That population is estimated to be between 25 – 100 people depending on the season. The west end of the island also includes a large paved area that once served as a parking lot for trucks. Wise Recycling is the only business currently in operation on the island with their building located on the west side of 14th Street. Crossing 14th Street to the east side of the island takes you past several buildings, most of which are currently empty. Past uses include commercial office and industry. Beyond these buildings the island narrows towards its east end resulting in a large field that once held the Richmond baseball diamond. Trees line the edges of the island and a tall billboard marks the most eastern point where the island ends below the interstate overpass. By comparison, the east end of the island provides traffic sounds versus the west end’s nature sounds.
